colour boards and mood boards!!

So we were told to create a colour bored to represent our theme. We had to pull colours from one of our images and finds similar colours in other things.

I went with this photo as I thought it would be challenging to find interesting colours in it. I also choose it as it fitted in with my theme ''rugged and rough'' really well. I began finding really interesting golden browns and blues from the picture. I let the different images flow into each other naturally on the page, as much of my theme consists of natural organic things.
We then had to make a figure board. I'm still trying to figure out what a mood board really is. I think it's to represent the emotion that runs through your theme. I found rough and rugged pictures and blended them to fade into each other naturally. I used blue and brown colours as I think I'm going to choose a blue and brown as my final two colours.

Wroking with some fabrics..

We then began to look at our pictures, sketches, paper patterns, etc. and try and transform them to fabric. I began trying to give a sense of the various images by manipulating and mark-making on fabric.

This swatch is to represent a picture of a decayed tree. I got a piece of carpet and cut the shape of the eroded parts into it. I then scrunched up back sack material and sewed it underneath so it would protrude out of the carpet.
This swatch is to represent the same image as the one above. I made this swatch using a similar idea but using different materials. I cut the eroded part of the tree out of heshin. I then cut out a piece of wadding and painted it with latex ( that was dyed using acrylic paint). I used heshin as it's a very organic natural looking material. I used wadding because it has a rough feel to it. I think the latex highlights the roughness of the material. I really like the swatch.
This was to represent a picture of planks of wood laid on top of each other. Here I just used material for a floor mop as material and black ink to create the print.
This swatch is inspired from my photo of footed turf. I used acrylic paint and ink on carpet. I picked this material because I think its texture resembles the texture of turf.
Here I burnt into the fabric using a lighter. This was to resemble a picture of tiny pebbles on the ground. I think the small holes and crinkles from the burn resemble pebbles quite well.
This was made using a new technique I learnt. This technique is called shaboori. I placed stones and rocks in the fabric and tied them tightly. I then placed the piece into boiling water. This kept their shape when I untied them. I used this material because it has a grainy, fluffy texture like that of a rock. I think this piece turns out really well.

I meant this piece to resemble my picture of the silver gates. It went wrong as I sewed the pleats badly. I still liked the idea so I kept two of the pleats for a swatch.

Creating patterns.

We then had to create patterns from the photos and sketches using black and white paper only. This was really interesting. It was fun seeing how you could manipulate and cut out the paper in different ways.

Sketching my photos.

I did some sketches of my photos so I could analyse the pattern within them more. I mainly did line drawings. Here are some sketches I did.

Some rubbings!

Here are some rubbings I did of things that are ''rugged and rough'' using chalk and chalk pastels.

Picking my theme.

After analysing all my photos I realised the ones like pictures of stones, wood, dirt, etc. had the most potiental for pattern. These mostly came from the natural envoirment. I decided to make my theme " Rough and Rugged''. I took more photos using this theme, as well as the ones I previously had. These are some of the photos.

Got into fashion design!!! :)

3 Week Project: Pattern

The brief said to take, photos, sketches, rubbings, etc. that show pattern in the natural and urban envoirment that sorrounds you. So, I went everywhere and anywhere to find patterns in urban and natural envoirment. I began to see pattern everywhere. Here's some of the photos I came up with.
