Fraying

Designers often use the technique 'fraying' to give a flimsy, etheral, or light look to their garments. Fraying is when fabric is worn, tattered or frayed at the ends. This is done by cutting the edges of light fabrics.

This technique was often used by Balenciaga in the 1950's.
